Our research is focused on clinical outcome studies, biomechanical investigations and basic research. It is centrally coordinated by a consultant surgeon managing the research activity and evaluated twice a year in a departmental steering committee. In addition to a close cooperation with various departments at the Klinikum rechts der Isar (e.g. the Institute for Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, Department of Neurosurgery), we regularly cooperate in an international network of large research institutions. Numerous projects are funded by the German Research Foundation. Prizes for our projects are regularly awarded by different orthopaedic societies (e.g. AGA, ESSKA).
Our clinical research focuses on the clinical and radiological evaluation of the surgical procedures performed in our department in prospective and retrospective outcome studies. In addition, our department regularly participates in multicenter studies.
In order to optimize the sportorthopaedic surgical procedures, the biomechanics laboratory of the Klinikum rechts der Isar adresses a wide range of research questions in shoulder and knee surgery. The research is mainly focused on – but not limited to – the treatment of AC joint fractures, shoulder instability or injuries to the meniscus.
Basic research focuses on tissue engineering and stem cell therapy to improve the treatment of cartilage damage and to improve the healing process of tendons. A well-equipped laboratory is available for this purpose.
